New CPT Hearing Aid Service Codes: A Cause for Concern

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently released the 2026 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (Proposed Rule), which contains new codes related to hearing aids, hearing aid related devices and their associated services. These codes were developed and shepherded by The American Academy of Audiology (AAA) and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). These new codes are slated to go into effect on January 1, 2026. You can view these codes and their descriptions beginning on page 240 of the Proposed Rule.

The Academy of Doctors of Audiology (ADA) harbors considerable concerns regarding the establishment of these codes, the elimination of codes 92590-92595, and the potential negative impact of these actions on private practices and the patients they serve. ADA has shared these concerns numerous times with AAA and ASHA over the past several years. In fact, ADA became so gravely concerned about the unintended consequences of this initiative that ADA and its expert volunteers rescinded their participation in a joint workgroup in 2023, when it became clear that the establishment of this new code set was the final, decided direction without compromise. You can read ADA’s rescission letter here

ADA, and its team of recognized experts in audiology reimbursement, are currently carefully reviewing these current code additions and will be providing additional information and guidance to ADA members following this review. We will use this to formulate our comments to CMS.

In the meantime, ADA Members are strongly encouraged to register for the ADA Advocacy Town Hall scheduled for tomorrow, Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
