Integrating Sound Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Intervention in Tinnitus Care
Return to: Webinars
This course reviews a science-based approach to tinnitus management that combines personalized sound therapy with behavioral and emotional support strategies. Tinnitus care is entering a new phase, with more comprehensive and accessible tools available to support patients effectively. Advances in digital health now make it possible to deliver structured, evidence-informed tinnitus management in a way that is both clinically sound and personalized.
Participants will examine a model that uses a personalized tinnitus pitch estimate to guide therapy and supports four sound therapy approaches: habituation-oriented sound enrichment, notched audio designed to target tinnitus frequencies, short partial-masking sessions for tinnitus spikes, and structured sound protocols for sleep. The session also reviews the role of Cognitive Behavioral Intervention, mindfulness-based approaches, and outcome measures such as the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) in tinnitus care.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe tinnitus and the primary clinical goals of care, including reducing tinnitus intrusiveness, distress, and functional impact on activities such as sleep, concentration, and mood.
- Explain how therapy using a the patient's personalized tinnitus tone maximizes training time and delivers significantly better results.
- Differentiate four sound therapy approaches used in tinnitus care — habituation-oriented sound enrichment, notched audio targeting tinnitus frequencies, short partial-masking sessions for symptom spikes, and structured sound therapy used during sleep.
- Describe the role of Cognitive Behavioral Intervention and mindfulness-based strategies in helping patients reduce tinnitus reactivity, reframe unhelpful thoughts, and improve coping and daily functioning.
