ADA Releases Member Resources for New Hearing Aid Service CPT Codes
Dear ADA Members,
Beginning January 1, 2026, 12 new Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes are scheduled to take effect. These codes cover:
- Hearing aid candidacy
- Hearing aid selection
- Hearing aid and assistive device fitting
- Follow-up and verification
- Electroacoustic analysis
At the same time, current CPT codes 92590–92595 will be deleted.
These changes may have a significant impact on audiology practices. ADA has expressed concerns about the impact and implementation of these codes, and will continue to advocate for timely and transparent information!
In the meantime, to help members prepare, the Academy of Doctors of Audiology (ADA) has developed a suite of resources to support you in learning, operationalizing, and monetizing these new codes.
Visit the members’ only resource page (note: you must be logged in to see the links to the resources—otherwise they will just show as orange locks)
Who May Be Most Impacted by the New Codes
Providers most affected by these changes may include:
- In-network providers who offer or bill unbundled or itemized hearing aid delivery.
- In-network providers for plans/payers/insurers that previously recognized:
- 92590–92595,
- 92700 (unlisted otorhinolaryngological procedure or service), or
- V5299 (hearing service, miscellaneous) as non-covered.
- This group may include:
- Commercial health plans (e.g., Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna)
- State Medicaid programs
- Early Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment (EPSDT) programs
- State Vocational Rehabilitation programs
- State and federal Workers’ Compensation programs
- VA Community Care
Who May Be Least Impacted by the New Codes
Providers likely to see less impact include the following:
- Out-of-network providers for all payers except traditional Medicare.
- Providers who never used 92590–92595 or billed services under 92700.
- These providers rely only on HCPCS V-codes (e.g., V5010, V5011, V5020).
Note: If this has been your process, there may have been billing situations where potential revenue was left on the table.
What Remains Uncertain
- How payers, hearing benefit/care plans, and third-party administrators will update their professional fees, billing policies, and allowances in response to these codes.
- Finalized CPT code numbers, which are expected in the next 6–8 weeks. (Resources currently use placeholder “X” codes.)
The CPT Changes booklet—detailing the new codes and their appropriate use—should be available in November/December 2025. ADA resources will continue to expand as updates are released.
