The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is offering some providers the opportunity to accelerate and advance their Medicare payments. It is outlined in the fact sheet available at https://www.cms.gov/newsroom/fact-sheets/change-healthcare/optum-payment-disruption-chopd-accelerated-payments-part-providers-and-advance. Each Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) offers their own process for applying for this program. You can locate your MAC at https://www.cms.gov/mac-info.

Recently, Cigna Healthcare, Amplifon Hearing Health Care (AHHC) and ADA became aware that some hearing aid manufacturers are paying providers rebates to encourage the use of the manufacturer’s devices for managed care patients. Rebate amounts are based on technology tiers and providers are paid a higher rate for recommending premium hearing aids.

Representatives from the Academy of Doctors of Audiology (ADA) met with representatives from the Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) Federal Employee Plan (FEP) on February 20, 2024 to gain insight on the 2024 FEP hearing aid prior authorization process and medical policies and share our experiences and thoughts on creation and implementation of these changes. ADA shared many of the issues that we have encountered and shared the experiences being reported by audiologists and FEP members.

On Friday, November 17, 2023, Representative Gus Bilirakis (R-FL-12) and Matt Cartwright (D-PA-8), introduced the Medicare Audiology Access Improvement Act of 2023, H.R. 6445, in the U.S. House of Representatives, with the support of 12 bipartisan original co-sponsors. The legislation will make overdue technical improvements to Medicare statutes to remove red tape, better deploy audiologists within the Medicare system, and streamline access to audiologic care for beneficiaries.

The Academy of Doctors of Audiology (ADA) is pleased to announce that Amyn Amlani, Ph.D. has been elected to serve as ADA President-Elect for the 2024 program year. Dr. Amlani is President of Otolithic, LLC—a for-profit firm with its global headquarters in Frisco, TX—that provides healthcare companies with competitive market analysis and support strategy, economic and financial assessments, and consumer insights, to ensure long-term profitability and economic viability.

Dr. Amlani holds a Doctor of Philosophy Degree (Ph.D.) in Audiology/Psychoacoustics from Michigan State University, a Master of Science in Audiology from Purdue University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Disorders from University of the Pacific. He also holds a Certificate in Health Economics and Outcomes Research (C-HECOR) from the University of Washington. Dr. Amlani is a regular contributor to national and international publications on topics related to audiology and hearing industry economics.
